A formal culinary education equips you with a wide range of cooking theories, cuisines, preparation techniques and ingredient knowledge. Even working at several restaurants would not be able to deliver the same experience or expertise. Graduating from a respected cooking school will open many doors. Don’t look at the tuition, fees, books, equipment and time spent as expenses. Look at them as an investment. It is an investment that can pay dividends for the rest of your life.
For one thing, you will gain a distinct advantage over those without a culinary arts degree in a competitive job market. Just put yourself in the shoes of the restaurant manager. That specialized, high-level degree from a prominent cooking school can often be the deciding factor.
It demonstrates your passion for cooking and commitment. As a hiring manager, I am always looking for that burning love for the job. Is the job applicant really able to commit themselves to my company and our customers? Once again, the cooking school degree is a definite indicator of both commitment and passion.
But what is commitment and passion without knowledge? Your culinary knowledge will be far superior to others because of your time in cooking school. Anyone can learn Recipes. What you will not only have learned the “what”, but the “how” and sometimes more importantly the “why!”
So find the perfect cooking school match for your location and goals. Then get out there and start cooking!
